This is designed to help potential adopters make an informed and conscious decision about bringing a dog into their life. By exploring expectations, responsibilities, and personal motivations, I aim to ensure that each adoption is a well-thought-out, lifelong commitment rather than an impulsive decision which could result in the dog being returned.
Have you thought about these considerations -
Why do you want to adopt a dog?
Are you seeking companionship, a lifestyle change, emotional support or to fill a hole in your life?
Are you expecting a dog to “fix” something in your life (loneliness, stress, relationship issues)?
How does a dog fit into your daily routine?
Are you motivated enough to walk the dog regularly every day - which will mean getting up early for their first walk, going out later in the evening for their last walk to make sure they sleep through and are comfortable?
Do you travel frequently? Work long hours?
Are you willing to walk the dog, spend time with it and give it unconditional love?
Can you afford to feed it and cover the basics costs of having a dog?
Can you financially afford vet bills, insurance policies, proper nutritious food, training if needed, holiday cover if you’re away, and emergencies?
Do you have time to commit to a dog in a meaningful way?
Can you commit to this for 10-15 or more years?
Are all household members aligned in this decision?
What’s your plan if challenges arise?
Do you have a support network?
Are you willing to pick up poo and dispose of it properly?
Are you romanticising the idea of having a dog live with you or do you feel you have considered all things, and your decision is based on practical reasons and the best interests of the dog?
If you decide after a week that its not for you and reality hits what will you do and how do you think this will impact on the dog?
If you feel that you have really took on board all that it means to have a dog live with you, and been honest with yourself then please also consider these factors -
Research breeds and choose one with a temperament that suits your lifestyle.
Really give a lot of thought to the dogs natural behaviours and emotional needs and what that will translate into in your life.
The impact of past trauma on rescue dogs and how to provide a stable environment and understanding for them.
